Beginning in the fall and moving into the winter, oftentimes people begin to neglect their lawn care duties, thinking that the drop in temperatures indicated the end of their responsibilities for the season. Contrary to that school of thought, cool weather lawn care often has a large impact on the new growth that emerges in the spring.

It’s important to take a few key steps during the colder months, to properly prepare your yard to grow healthy and green in the spring. Although the winter months don’t get too severe in Georgia, the colder months do add stress to your lawn, and if the grass does stop growing and go dormant for a few months, it’s important to give it some tlc to maintain the health and growth during the winter season.

First on our list is a common one: mowing. The time to stop mowing your lawn is when it stops growing- it’s as simple as that. Since the winter weather in the south can be very erratic, there’s no telling exactly when this will happen. All predictions aside, when it comes to landscaping, your athens ga lawn will let you know exactly when it’s gone dormant, if it has at all. Allowing the grass to grow too long simply because of the season will make it more difficult for the grass to take in vital nutrients, could damage the health of your lawn, and can lead to overgrowths of various fungus and weeds. Since fungus and weeds are the last things we want to allow to grow on our lawn, keep up the mowing until it’s the grass no longer needs it.

As the leaves continue to fall, it’s important to blow them away so they don’t cover up patches of lawn. Leaves can add valuable mulch properties to lawns, but they can also obstruct your lawn from receiving water, sunlight, and nutrients.

Leaf coverage can also encourage weed growth, which remains a concern throughout the winter. Most weeds will emerge in the spring, so if they are allowed to flourish through the winter time, they will sprout up with some strength when the warmer months come around. Lawn treatments, leaf blowing, and weed control can all work together to mitigate this issue.
