Spring Lawn Care Rush

Today on the blog we wanted to highlight how there has never been a better time to start your lawn care service with us in Athens, Georgia, and talk about how and why you should set up your service now. Spring is just around the corner, and here at Athens Lawn Care & Service we’re just about to head into our busiest time of the year.

Around March and April, everyone and their mother decides to call for lawn care services, and they want to get on the weekly schedule as soon as they can. We always tell our clients that to really see the results they’re looking for, they really need to set up a weekly lawn care service, so their grass can get the TLC it needs to grow green and strong. However, if you call us in April when things are super busy for us, we can’t promise that we’ll have enough availability for everyone.

We love our clients, and we don't want to do anyone’s lawn service half way, so we won’t be able to take everyone on. The best way to avoid this is to call now, and set up your lawn maintenance now! Your landscaping will be better for it, we’re telling you. Grass care can be sort of a fine art, and if you call now, we’ll have the extra time to get your lawn service and landscaping dialed in before the warmer months come. And trust us, they’re on the way.

We see it every year- people wait till they want to spend time in their yard in the spring time before they give us a call, and oftentimes that takes us a longer time to get your yard whipped into shape, because it’s been neglected for so long, and we’re busier then as well. Do your landscaping a solid, and give us a call now. Schedule your weekly or biweekly landscaping maintenance and lawn care, and we’ll get you on the schedule in no time.

Seriously, we love new clients, and getting to dial in their landscapes, but we want to do the best work possible, and in order for us to do that, we’d love to get started right away! Don’t wait until it’s too late. Let us come by, give you an estimate, and get started now. January is actually a great time to get started because we’ll be able to start lawn mowing, and we’ll see where will need some seeding, fertilizing, etc, check the water schedule, scan for any winter weeds or wild onions, and we’ll be able to look into the next month or so to get everything going.

If you’re considering hiring a lawn care company in Athens, or want someone to keep your landscaping in check, we’d love to have the opportunity to do that for you. Don’t hesitate or wait till spring- give us a call now!

January lawn care and landscaping tips for Athens, Georgia

1/18/2021

Today on the blog we’re going to go over some January lawn care and landscaping tips for Athens, Georgia. In January, we’re going to want to begin preparing the lawn for spring, which will involve a few housekeeping tasks that will help your landscaping come April and May. These tips will get your lawn in order so by the time the warmer months come back around, your yard will be fully ready to come back in full swing.

One of the first things that we often mention as a good thing to do in January is new planting or transplanting. The dryer, colder nature of this month makes it a prime time to plant new trees in your yard, update your landscape, and transplant new shrubs and bushes.

It’s also a good time to prune any limbs or branches that need to go. During the colder months, most of the trees will have gone dormant for the winter, so now is the best time to trim them up, cut back those crepe myrtles, and get your trees in order for spring, so your landscaping is primed for new growth.

Our next tip is important for all of the cooler months, but it’s best during this season to keep a clean lawn: to rake up any leaves, remove any debris from the lawn, and generally keep everything off the grass. The reason your grass gets so yellow and dead looking in the winter is that your grass goes dormant, in order to protect it from the cold and harsh weather. To do this, the grass will conserve its energy by hibernating in a state of dormancy. It’s not dead, it’s simply protecting itself, so it’s best to remove any obstructions from the grass and the lawn to ensure the grass can grow back in the spring. Dormant grass can be quite fragile, so it’s important to allow it to receive all the nutrients it can get.

Finally, our last tip for january landscaping in Athens is to check for any winter weed growth, and treat and remove anything that you see. Whether you’re using a pre emergent weed killer, or you’re pulling the weeds out by hand, you don’t want winter weeds to get ahold of your lawn during the cooler months. Winter weeds can harm your grass while it’s in its dormant state, and can grow even stronger in the spring if left to flourish. To preserve your beautiful landscaping, it’s important to take care of your lawn while we move through the winter season, so it has the best chance to grow back healthy and strong in spring.

Professional Lawn Care Tips

Another day, another round of professional lawn care tips. We know most of our clients hire us because not only do we provide the landscaping, lawn care, and lawn maintenance services within Athens, but we also take the chore of lawn care off of their plate, so they can spend more time doing what they love. Since what we love is lawn care, we don’t mind spreading some wisdom and giving our readers out there some professional tips to get their landscaping or lawn mowing to the next level. When you hire a professional lawn care service, the main benefit is the time you save yourself, but if you are someone who is looking to do their yard work themselves, here is the next installment in our series of professional lawn care tips that you may not know.

Our first tip that we haven’t spent much time going over yet is seed variety. So, depending on your environment (seasonal, northern, southern, shady, direct sun, , etc), you’ll want to base your grass seed choice off of that. For a new grass installation, whether you are growing the grass yourself or installing sod, it’s important to take a few things into consideration when choosing a grass type. For instance, there are warm season grasses and cold season grasses, and if you live somewhere that doesn’t receive much rain or you do not have sprinklers or any irrigation system, you’ll want to look for a drought resistant variety. Grass choice seems so basic, but it’s an important step of the process within lawn care that many people pay no mind to. No matter whether you’re mowing your lawn regularly, fertilizing, watering, if you choose a grass variety that does not do well in your environment, you’re going to be consistently fighting an uphill battle. As far as lawn maintenance goes, you want to give your grass the best chance to flourish and grow green and lush, so if you’re having trouble, either do some research into your grass choice, or call a professional, maybe just to start with. If you’re growing grass for the first time or looking to have sod installed, it really will be worth while to call a professional landscaping crew or lawn maintenance team like ours at Athens Lawn Care & Service. A professional lawn maintenance company will be able to get your yard going and growing, and it may be easier for you to do the maintenance aspect, once it’s grown steadily for a while.

Our next tip kind of flows naturally from the first, and that is if you prefer to do your own lawn care or grass cutting yourself, you may find it easier to start with a lawn care service, and slowly transition into doing it yourself. With lawn care comes watering schedules, fertilizing, mowing, and more, so if you’re starting from a beginning point, or aren’t sure how to begin, setting up with a lawn care team, having them get everything going well, and then transitioning into DIY may be the best method for you. We get it, sometimes people just want to handle their backyard themselves! Rather than having a landscaping service come all the time, maybe have them come on a regular basis, and then once things have come to a natural maintenance standpoint, maybe 3-4 months in, start taking over the fertilizing, then the mowing, et cetera.

We hope you found these two tips helpful, and we look forward to continuing our series on professional tips for lawn care, lawn maintenance, and landscaping in Athens, GA. We’ll continue posting, and we hope you’ll give us a call soon!

Advantages of Hiring A Lawn Care Service

1/7/2021

Within Athens and the greater surrounding areas, most of the housing developments have small to medium yards, and as many homeowners have found, grass is actually not the easiest thing to take care of. Grass is fairly high maintenance, which can make it a regular chore on many homeowner’s weekly to-do lists. A bright gree, lush, healthy lawn is definitely something most of our clients aspire to, and we totally get it. That golf course grass look is beautiful, and can make entertaining outside, summer nights on the yard one of the best parts of the warmer months. As a lawn maintenance and lawn care company,  we love providing custom lawn care plans for each yard we take care of, so we can help each of our client’s yards look their best. Most often for our clients, the issue isn’t whether they want their lawn taken care of each week, but more likely, who is going to take care of it? Doing your lawn care yourself is definitely doable, but can be a time consuming endeavor when done right.

So today in this post, we thought it would be a good time to go over the advantages of hiring a lawn care company to take over all of your yard maintenance needs.

  • The first advantage to hiring a local lawn care company like Athens Lawn Care & Service is the expertise that comes with spending years studying lawn care. We have spent years learning the best intervals to water grass, the proper way to apply seed, how to fertilize properly, and what the best length to cut grass to season to season. These are all things that we take into consideration when performing lawn care for each property. Different seasons require different needs for lawns, and we’ve learned over the years the best practices when it comes to athens ga landscaping and lawn care Athens GA. We also have access to professional grade product that are not available at the consumer level, which is an added benefit to hiring a professional lawn care business.
  • Consistency: one of the main reasons we get called in by homeowners is that they had tried to do lawn care for a while, they seeded, fertilized, watered, etc, and they weren’t seeing the results they wanted. Most often, we can boil down the reason for this, and it is consistency. Just like how when you eat a healthy meal, you don’t expect to be a fitness guru the next week, you can’t do lawn care a few times and expect to have a lush, healthy lawn. Grass depends on consistency for it to grow healthy and thick, so one major advantage of hiring a lawn care team is the consistent schedule they will stick to. When you hire a lawn care Athens GA company, you can trust that your lawn will get mowed, watered, and generally taken care of every single week, or whatever schedule you subscribe to. Just like working out, lawn care and grass growth take time put in, and consistent action,
  • Time: another major advantage to hiring a lawn care company is the time that you will save by outsourcing this task. Let’s be honest, when you’re not getting paid for it, mowing your lawn, edging the property, or removing weeds can become a chore. If you’re spending your saturday’s mowing the lawn for half the day, that is a major disadvantage. Since lawn care companies have crews, they can get the job done quickly and efficiently, and you’ll have your weekend back to yourself. If you’re looking for lawn care Athens GA, we’d love to help you out. Give us a call at 706-450-8588

Secrets from a landscaping company in Athens, GA

1/5/2021

Hello friends, lawn care clients in Athens, GA, and anyone else reading this blog! Yesterday we posted an article we wrote about professional lawn care secrets, and when we were brainstorming about tips and industry knowledge points we could give out, we thought of way more than we could include in one post. So today is a continuation of yesterday’s post!

We often get asked- why should I pay someone to do my lawn care? Is it really worth it to hire a professional lawn care company? And to that we say that depends- it depends on your goals for your lawn, your time availability, and your priorities. If your goal is simply to mow your lawn once a week, then go for it! If your goal is lush, golf course grass, you will most definitely be better off hiring a professional. The reason for that is multifaceted, but most of it comes down to skills honed after years in the profession, industry knowledge acquired after years of Athens GA landscaping, experience over years of usage of various products, and more.

When it comes to applying products to your lawn, determining the best lengths to mow to throughout the year, the amount of water needed to hydrate, the right type of seeds to plant, and fertilizer to add, your lawn care athens ga professionals have experience doing all of that, and they know what works. While you may have to go through trial and error, lawn care is our passion, so we’ve put the time and work into making sure we’re up to date on industry standards. We want your grass to look it’s best, so if there’s anything we can do to help your lawn grow lush and green for spring, we’ll do it.

That being said, here are some more tips we thought of when discussing lawn care professional secrets.

  1. Choose your grass type based off of your location: this is a big one- different grasses grow best in different areas, so what grows best in Pebble Beach is not going to be the best choice for your landscaping in Athens GA. The soil is different, the rain amount is different, and different grasses have different requirements. If you choose a grass that does not handle humidity well, chances are it will be an uphill battle trying to cultivate a healthy lawn in Athens. If you choose a grass that is not drought resistant in california, you will also struggle. Such is life. For Athens, it’s important to choose a grass type that does well in heat, that can also handle chilly winters. Ask your lawn care professional for their best recommendations!
  2. Avoid weed control that works to prevent weeds, rather than treat them: if you’re reseeding a lawn, supplanting your grass with some seeding here and there, or are simply worried about the possibility of weeds, call your lawn care professional rather than buying a pre emergent weed control. Pre emergent weed controls work by preventing weed seeds from germinating, so if you have applied seed in your yard, it will also prevent those seeds from germinating as well. This is not what you want. We prefer to treat weeds, rather than prevent them, which can also inhibit grass growth.
  3. Decide your mowing cycle on the length of the grass and the season, rather than on a time frame. Ok, hear us out: it matters what length you cut your grass to, it really does. During the hotter months like july in august, your lawn depends on longer blades to get enough nutrients, and to protect itself from the heat. As the seasons change, so do the needs of your lawn change. As a professional company specializing in lawn care and landscaping in Athens, GA , this is one of those things you’re really going to have to pay attention to if you are doing your lawn care yourself, lest your lawn come up in the spring looking dull and yellow.

Professional Lawn Care Secrets

1/4/2021

With our business at Athens Lawn Care & Service, it’s always been important to us to lead with value. Our business thrives by providing valuable services and maintenance plans for our clients  and we always seek to provide information, tips, and customized care for each lawn. In our few years of business, we’ve found that the relationships we build with clients, and the value we put forward to nurture those relationships, has been the driving force behind our continued business in Athens, GA. So, in the light of that, we decided to put together a couple of our professional lawn care lessons we’ve learned over years of experience, and some secrets that lawn care professionals would agree with. So, here goes!

One of the first tips that may seem basic, but is one of those things that most people really don’t seem to grasp with DIY lawn care is that you absolutely must be willing to put in more effort than your expecting to, more days a week than you planned to. What we mean by that is if you are after that green, lush, golf course grass, it’s going to take a lot more than weekly lawn mowing to get there. Healthy lawns take a lot of work to get that healthy, and that work includes working on your sprinkler system, fertilizing, 3 x a week mowings, and then tweaking the process month to month to ensure you’re giving the lawn what it needs to grow.

The second secret of professional lawn care is making sure to understand your soil. The soil is where your grass seeds and grass growth will get the bulk of its nutrients, so it's valuable to understand what’s going on with your soil, so you can treat it accordingly. Treating your grass while neglecting your soil is like spraying febreze over a dirty room. It’s not going to really help until you get to the root of the problem. Sprinklers are also an invaluable part of maintaining a healthy soil. If you don’t have a working sprinkler system, it's going to be very hard to achieve bright green, healthy grass. On top of that, don’t worry about comparing your lawn to your neighbors lawn. Different lawns can have vastly different soil requirements, and since you don’t know exactly how the soil at your neighbors house has been treated for the last decade, you really can’t compare. Different soils, different grass types, different leveling techniques during the building process- yep, these all play a factor. These are all reasons why we recommend reaching our to a professional lawn care company if you are really trying to achieve professional results. Your lawn care team should be able to take into account all of these factors, and take care of both your lawn and soil in a customized, intensive way.

With all of that soil knowledge, a little sidenote is that it is always really helpful to get your soil tested every couple of years. Getting your soil tested will allow you to understand your soil PH, which can provide valuable insight into your lawn care strategy. A proper PH is vital for your grass to be able to get nutrients and moisture from the soil, so consider getting your soil tested if it’s been a while.

Finally, our last tip is if you do choose to do your lawn care yourself, it is absolutely so important for you to read all instructions on every label before you apply anything to your lawn. Whether it’s fertilizer, weed control products, herbicide or other treatments, you need to know what the instructions are, and how much product you really need to apply to your lawn. When you are determining how much lawn coverage you have, you need to think of it in terms of your actual grass space, not the lot that your house sits on. For example, if you buy and apply fertilizer for a two acre space because you have a two acre property, you are going to do actual damage to your grass, because your grass occupies far less than two acres. If your house is half an acre of space, you have 1.5 acres of grass, and some of that includes your driveway. See how complicated this can get? Long story short, when it comes to applying product, take a minute to figure out exactly what the requirements are. Your lawn will be better for it.
